Stanford
University's Folding@home distributed computing project has seen its
capacity more than double in the last month, thanks to the addition of idle
processor cycles from hundreds of thousands of PlayStation
3 consoles.

An application
supporting the program, which seeks to better understand how proteins fold

the number of TFLOPS from consoles is more than double that from Windows PCs,
which are the second-largest group of clients running the software.

Researchers are keen to unlock the mysteries of protein folding because it's
suspected that misfolds in proteins are the cause of several diseases, including
Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis and some forms of cancer.

The computer power needed to perform the modeling and calculations is immense
and doesn't rely on fast networking as much as pure processing power.

Due to increased strain on our public education system, not all schools can
afford to supply their classrooms with computers, leaving some students
ill-equipped in this increasingly technology-driven world.

Schools can, however, turn to Alberta Computers for Schools for a helping hand,
as the organization provides refurbished computers to students across the
province free of charge.

Computers for Schools was co-founded by Industry Canada and the TelecomPioneers,
an industry-based volunteer organization, in 1993.

Villeneuve explains that even though the province is wealthy, the need for the
program is still very real.

“An issue in the province is in the rural areas,” Villeneuve says. “Declining
enrolment means the school boards are getting less money—because they’re paid
per capita—and so they’re using us a lot.

But even in the city, they simply are not able to purchase the number of
computers that they need or want.”

No-smoking signs are being provided to every bar and restaurant across Northern
Ireland registered with the federation as the April 30 deadline approaches.

As well as informing customers of the change in the law, the signs are urging
smokers who wish to give up to "take action" by calling Action Cancer or
visiting their website where they can find support and advice.

"Action Cancer provide six-week smoking cessation programmes to various groups
across Northern Ireland and we would encourage smokers to use this change and
the support available to quit for good."

The new legislation means that smoking will no longer be permitted in enclosed
and substantially enclosed public places and workplaces.

Statistics show that 80% of cancer is preventable with healthy lifestyle
choices, including eating a healthy diet, taking regular exercise, and not

The sign outside Dave James’ shop in Seattle, Washington, says more about getting your life repaired than it does about fixing your vacuum cleaner, but Dave is in business to do both. The top line of the sign is always the same: Free Bibles Inside. The second line changes and features thoughts such as: Surrender Your Heart for a Brand-New Start.

Mr. James has repaired thousands of vacuum cleaners and given away thousands of
Bibles to his customers. It’s his way of saying thanks to the Lord for saving
him from destruction.

As a successful businessman, Dave James had slipped into a life of drug
addiction. “If God hadn’t taken cocaine away from me,” he says, “I’d be dead.”

Mr. Branon, I have to talk with you about something really important," said the voice on the other end of the line. It was 2 days before a small group of teens and adults were to leave for Jamaica on a special missions trip. We had been planning for months to go to a school for deaf children to build a much-needed playground. So, when this teen called, I thought, Oh, no. She can’t go.

But when she, her mom, and I met for lunch that day, I found out how truly special this young lady was. She told me she was donating her entire savings to help pay for the trip—money she had been saving to buy a car. "As I was praying the past couple of nights," she explained, "I felt that God was telling me to give all of my money." That day we had tears of joy with our burgers and fries.

The Whale

If you read the front page story of the SF Chronicle,you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that causedher to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards ofline rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a linetugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralone Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she wasso bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her .

A very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.

They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed gently around-she thanked them. Some said it was the most incrediblybeautiful experience of their lives.

The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same. May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude I pass this on to you, in the same spirit.

Florida County Dumping its Landfills

A Florida county plans to build a facility to get rid of their landfills,
generate electricity and produce construction material, all using a process
called plasma gasification which vaporizes garbage at temperatures hotter than
the surface of the sun.
The $425 million facility expected
to be built in St. Lucie County will use plasma arcs to turn garbage into gas
and rock-like material. It will be the first municipal plasma waste processing
facility in the united states, and the largest in the world. Expected to be
completed within 2 years, the 100,000 square food facility will process 3,000
tons of waste per day. Fed not only with waste being produced currently, the
facility will also begin to process the waste already in the county landfill.
Estimates predict that the entire volume of the existing landfill, 4.3 million
tons of trash collected since 1978, will be processed within 18 years.

So much of what we hear about the state of the envionment is doom & gloom,
with predictions of global catastrophe and visions of a dark, overpopulated
and hot future. It’s definitely important to heed the warnings about what’s
happening to the planet, however focusing only on the negative will result
in us feeling as though the situation is hopeless; it’s not. Here are a few

I’m sitting inside a narrow conference room at a research facility in Bristol, Connecticut, chatting with Joseph Longo, the founder and CEO of Startech Environmental Corporation. As we munch on takeout Subway sandwiches, a plate-glass window is the only thing separating us from the adjacent lab, which contains a glowing caldera of “plasma” three times as hot as the surface of the sun. Faith creates. We, humans are endowed with a spiritual self who can guide us and saves us if we let it be. This plasma converter is an amazing tool and it must be the working of a spiritual guidance. They called it the "Eleventh hour". Just as we are about to lose hope, solution appeared on the "eleventh hour".

Plasma is simply a gas (air) that the Converter ionizes so it becomes an effective electrical conductor and produces a lightning-like arc of electricity that is the source of the intense energy transferred to the waste material as radiant energy. The arc in the plasma plume within the vessel can be as high as 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit ... three times hotter than the surface of the Sun. When waste materials are subjected to the intensity of the energy transfer within the vessel, the excitation of the wastes' molecular bonds is so great that the waste materials' molecules break apart into their elemental components (atoms). It is the absorption of this energy by the waste material that forces the waste destruction and elemental dissociation.

I had prepared a series of blogsites that I had set-up elaborately a few months ago. Since I was testing on the structure rather than the content, I did not have much of content. And a week ago I found out that Google (which was the host) had taken them out of existence (not meant to be).

Those blogsites were intended to be filled with popular news. The popular news were going to be composed of the everydays news: most read, most emailed, etc., etc., etc...

Today, while looking to rebuild one of my lost blogsite, I came across this website http://www.newsforthesoul.com/ and it inspired me to create this site. (Destiny?)

A Different Thought, A Different Reality

We know that our behaviors are influenced by our body especially our genes. We also know that our behaviors are influenced by the behavior of our close associates. But one thing I remind myself (if I can remember) is that I am the creator my thoughts and therefore of my own behavior.

Actions are followed by thoughts.

While I doing my first cross-country skiing. My vision was constantly distracted by red ribbons that served as markings for some off-track potholes, poles, etc... As I caught the sight of the red ribbons, my thoughts followed and I noticed I was skiing toward the red ribbon area which I should be staying away from. This I found very interesting.

Here is my Distraction Rule:

If there is a strong distraction coming from off the track there should be an egual or greater distraction against that, coming from the track.
And a good example, the lines that are painted on the roads to keep the cars on their track.

So, after a few close calls, I decided to focus more on the track with my thoughts, and not get distracted by the red ribbons. Needless to say, I skied much better.
